A cargo ship carrying 25,250 tonnes of imported sugar reached Port Qasim at 10:30 PM on Thursday evening.

This sugar has been imported on the instructions of the Ministry for Industries and Production and it would be handed over to the Punjab Food Department for distribution to dealers in the open market across Punjab.

In a related development, Federal Minister for Industries and Production Hammad Azhar told a news channel on Thursday that sugar prices would come down by Rs15 per kilogram at least. He said the government had removed taxes on sugar and done physical verification of sugar stocks. He said that sugar was available at utility stores for Rs68 per kilogram. He said the Utility Stores Corporation of Pakistan was bound to purchase sugar in line with the Pepra rules.

Hammad said that past governments gave subsidy on exaggerated stocks of sugar. He said that NAB, FIA and FBR were taking notice of issues involving the sugar industry. He said that indiscriminate action would be taken against law violators regardless of their political affiliation. He said the government was working day and night to bring the sugar prices down.
