Lahore tops list of world’s most polluted cities as air quality deteriorates sharply

Punjab capital Lahore has once again been ranked among the world’s most polluted cities, with its Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching a hazardous level of 206.

According to air quality monitoring data, the concentration of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Lahore’s air has surged to around 191.2 micrograms per cubic meter — several times higher than the safe limits set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Environmental experts attribute the worsening pollution to vehicular emissions, industrial smoke, crop residue burning, and dust from ongoing construction activities. They warn that as winter sets in, the combination of smog and fog could make the air even more dangerous to breathe.

Experts have urged residents to limit outdoor activities and avoid unnecessary travel, particularly advising children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory conditions to take extra precautions. They also recommended wearing protective masks when going outside.
