NAB arrests PML-N leader Khawaja Asif in assets beyond means case 

The National Accountability Bureau on Tuesday arrested Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader and MNA Khawaja Muhammad Asif in assets beyond means case.

According to the details, the senior leader of PML-N arrested in Iqama case. PML-N spokesperson confirmed the news and said that Khawaja Asif was arrested from the residence of party leader Ahsan Iqbal in Islamabad. 

Khawaja Asif would be brought to the local accountability court for remand. NAB sources said that Khawaja Asif failed to satisfy the anti-graft body about his assets worth Rs220 million. 

NAB informed National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser about the development. A team of doctors will examine the PML-N leader tomorrow. 

Earlier, Khawaja Asif had decided against appearing before the NAB after which his counsel reached the office to present the relevant record. The NAB had directed the PML-N leader to appear in person along with the managing director and present the relevant record for the period 2004-17. 

On June 1, 2018, a three-member Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Umar Ata Bandial had overturned the Islamabad High Court’s decision to disqualify Khawaja Asif for life.

Nawaz-Fazl contact 

PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman held a telephonic contact on Tuesday and discussed future strategy after the arrest of Khawaja Asif. They expressed their serious concerns over the arrest of PML-N leader. Senate polls and by-polls came under the discussed during the conversation. 


Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz condemned the government for arresting Khawaja Asif. Both the PML-N leaders said that the government believed in political victimization. They said that the arrest of Khawaja Asif showed that the PTI-led government was in panic. 

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman also grilled the government over the arrest of PML-N leader Khawaja Asif.
