The new Local Government Act enacted in the federal capital has been challenged in the Islamabad High Court which has sent notices to the respondents including president of Pakistan, interior secretary and law secretary in this connection, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The court has also issued notice to Attorney General of Pakistan Khalid Jawed Khan summoning him on Jan 11.

The contestants taking part in the forthcoming local government elections in Islamabad challenged the LG Ordinance in the Islamabad High Court on Wednesday.

Petitioner Sardar Mehtab pleaded that direct election for the mayor and abolition of posts of deputy mayors was against the law.

Counsel for the petitioner, Qazi Adil Advocate prayed that the council of unelected people formed to run the local government was also ultra vires.

The New LG Act promulgated through an ordinance when the Local Government Law, 2015 still exists is in contravention of the constitution, he added.

The court has demanded a reply from interior and law secretaries.
