US snowboarding entrepreneur visits Pakistan for sports innovation

The U.S. Embassy in Islamabad has launched its Freedom 250 lecture series, an initiative aimed at engaging Pakistani audiences on shared priorities including entrepreneurship, the digital economy, and innovation-driven growth. The series opened with a high-profile discussion featuring Donna Carpenter, co-founder and chair of the board of directors of U.S.-based Burton Snowboards, alongside Samar Khan, a Pakistani professional athlete and alumna of the U.S. Department of State espnW Global Sports Mentoring Program.

On January 28, the two speakers met with sports professionals, youth leaders, and members of the business community at an event held at the newly constructed United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan headquarters. The session focused on how sports entrepreneurship can serve as a catalyst for youth development, innovation, and cross-cultural exchange.

Carpenter and Khan highlighted the broader impact of sports beyond competition, emphasizing its role in nurturing leadership, teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving skills. They underscored how these attributes can empower young people to contribute meaningfully to their communities and drive positive change at both local and global levels.

U.S. Embassy Minister Counselor for Public Diplomacy Andy Halus addressed the gathering, pointing to Pakistan’s demographic advantage and potential for growth. “Pakistan has a young, energetic population and untapped potential in sports and entrepreneurship. By engaging with students, athletes, and professionals, we not only exchange ideas and explore ways sports can empower communities but also foster partnerships that make both our countries more prosperous. These connections help create new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and economic growth, advancing shared interests and deepening the ties between the United States and Pakistan,” he said.

The Freedom 250 lecture series is designed to bring distinguished alumni of U.S.-sponsored exchange programs, American business leaders, and subject-matter experts to Pakistan. Through public lectures and interactive discussions, the initiative seeks to showcase American expertise while building long-term partnerships.

The series forms part of broader efforts to strengthen people-to-people ties as the United States commemorates 250 years of independence, using dialogue, education, and collaboration to foster mutual understanding and shared progress.
