Confusion clouds PTI’s protest call on August 5

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) central leadership is reportedly mulling distancing itself from the planned August 5 protest, the 24 NewsHD TV channel reported on Tuesday. 

The key reason behind the move is allegedly internal confusion and frustration among the party’s provincial leaders.

It is pertinent that the PTI has called for a nationwide protest on August 5, urging the public to rally behind what it described as a “historic movement.”

According to party sources, the central leadership has distanced itself from the protest planning and shifted the entire responsibility to the provincial leaderships under the banner of the “Tehreek Tahaffuz Aaeen-e-Pakistan” (Movement for the Protection of the Constitution of Pakistan).

Sources revealed that PTI’s central leadership, including Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, has refused to provide a concrete plan for the protests, instead instructing provincial organizers to devise their strategies. It means that the protest movement now appears to lack centralized direction.

Party insiders revealed that there has been significant hesitation within the PTI’s core leadership regarding the execution of the August 5 protest.

Despite initial calls for demonstrations, no clear or unified protest strategy has been issued from the top.

Instead, the leadership is reported to have decided to pass on the burden of organizing and strategizing to the provincial units without providing any concrete direction.

A notable example of this internal discord emerged when PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja reportedly refused to issue a protest plan.

When approached by Punjab’s chief organizer, Aliya Hamza, for guidance, Raja instead instructed her to devise and implement a strategy independently, stating that the four regional presidents in Punjab would assist her.

Sources quoted Raja as saying that since provincial units in Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Balochistan had created their strategies, Punjab should do the same.

“Central leadership neither has a plan nor is capable of giving one,” Raja reportedly told Hamza, signaling a complete delegation of responsibility.

Provincial leaders, particularly in Punjab, are said to be unhappy with the lack of direction from the central command.

They had formally requested a detailed protest plan and strategy, which was not provided.

This lack of central coordination has raised questions about the PTI’s organizational strength and unity in mobilizing political resistance.
