Relief for tourists: Upper Swat road reopened after landsliding on Kalam route

Travellers received welcome relief on Wednesday after traffic was fully restored on Shaho Road in Upper Swat, following its temporary closure due to a landslide caused by heavy rainfall and fast-flowing glacier water, according to 24NewsHD TV.

According to officials, continuous heavy rain and a strong glacier runoff brought large amounts of debris onto Shaho Road, blocking the main route to Kalam.

The road remained closed for several hours, causing significant disruption to traffic and leaving travelers stranded.

The Upper Swat Development Authority (USDA) responded promptly by deploying heavy machinery to clear the debris from the affected section of the road.

Following the clearance operation, the route was reopened for all types of traffic, allowing vehicles to resume normal movement.

Authorities have advised tourists and local residents to remain cautious while travelling through mountainous areas, as continued rainfall and glacier activity may increase the risk of landslides and road blockages.

Earlier on July 16, 2026, a tourist lost his life after a glacier collapsed near Andrab Lake in Upper Swat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to rescue officials, the victim, Abdul Wajid, 27, son of Abdul Latif and a resident of Bahawalpur district in Punjab, was buried under debris following the glacier collapse.

His body was recovered and shifted to Tehsil Headquarters Hospital in Kalam for legal formalities. Police initiated an investigation into the incident, while authorities continued to gather further details.
