Seven die, eight injured as rising floodwaters, relentless rain put Punjab on high alert

Seven people, including two children, died, while eight others were injured in different rain-related incidents in Ferozewala, Bhera, Lahore, Gujranwala and Pindi Bhattian respectively as the fourth spell of monsoon rains lashed Punjab on Wednesday, reported the 24NewsHD TV channel. 

Four youths drowned in Ferozewala after Bheer nullah burst its banks and water entered several localities.

The worst-affected area was Pathan Colony. 

And to rub salt into the wounds of residents, nobody from the administration had come to their rescue till the filing of this story. 

Two children died while four others were injured after the roof of a dairy farm collapsed in Bhera, Sargodha due to rain.

Rescuers pulled out the bodies from underneath the rubble and shifted them to THQ Hospital, Bhera.

Rescuers said that the deceased were identified as five months old Muhammad Ayyan and five-year-old Muhammad Haseeb, while the injured as Kiran, wife of Muhammad Rehman, Yousaf, son of Khuda Bux, Samina, daughter of Yousaf and Mehmood, son of Imran.

One person was injured when the roof of his house caved in in Baghbanpura locality of Lahore. 

The injured person, who was identified as 25-year-old Jahangir, was rushed to Kot Khawaja Saeed Hospital.   

24-year-old Abdullah died at Jinnah Road in Gujranwala after he came into contact with a wire at his home.

Three people, a woman and her two daughters, were injured when the roof of their house came crashing down at Pindi Bhattian.  

The injured were identified as 45-year-old Bakhtawar, 14-year-old Gurrya and 10-year-old Swera.

Punjab rain 

It rained cats and dogs in Narowal, Shakargarh and Sarai Alamgir, flooding roads and low-lying areas.

In Ferozewala, seven to eight feet of water was accumulated following the downpour. 

Rainwater entered people’s homes in the city forcing them to take shelter on rooftops of their houses.   

Light to heavy rain was reported from different parts of Lahore, including Lahore High Court, Mughalpura, Shalimar and Canal Road, which turned the weather pleasant.  

The Met Office said that the maximum temperature would be recorded at 33 degrees Celsius, while it would remain 27 degrees Celsius on the minimum side.

Breeze was blowing in the city at the speed of 11 kilometers per hour, while the level of moisture was recorded at 90 per cent.

Rain predicted for Islamabad 

The weather department predicted intermittent rainfall for Islamabad due to which, it said, low-lying areas would be flooded. 

The maximum temperature in the federal capital was expected to touch 34 degrees Celsius mark, while it would remain 26 degrees Celsius on the minimum side. 

Water level rises in River Indus 

Meanwhile, water level in the River Indus at Guddu Barrage has gone up by 43, 162 cusecs in just one day, leading to medium flood at the site.  

According to the Control Room, the inflow of water at the site stood at over 383,000 cusecs on Wednesday, while the outflow was recorded at over 345,000. 

Surge in the water level increased pressure on the river’s embankments.

Breach develops in canal in Bahawalpur 

Over 50 acres of land was submerged after a 40-feet wide breach developed in a canal in Bahawalpur. 

However, locals were trying to plug the breach on their own till last reports came in.

They demanded action against those whose negligence led to the breach.

Nullah Dek in medium flood

Meanwhile, Nullah Dek, flowing from Jammu in India, was in medium flood at Pasrur on Wednesday as 12,500 cusecs of water was flowing in the nullah, forcing the administration to issue an alert.

More rainfall predicted

Mainly hot and humid weather is expected over most parts of the country. However thundershowers are expected at isolated places in upper Punjab (Lahore, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Kasur, Sialkot, Narowal, Chakwal, Attock, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Murree, Galiyat, Rawalpindi), upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (Chitral, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur and Waziristan) and Kashmir during the next 24 hours
