Finland to close embassies in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Myanmar in 2026

Finland has announced that it will close its embassies in Islamabad, Kabul, and Yangon in 2026, citing operational and strategic reasons, according to a statement issued by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The embassies will be closed for operational and strategic reasons, linked to changes in the countries’ political situation and their limited commercial and economic relations with Finland,” the ministry said. The closures will be carried out by decree of the President of the Republic.

Preparations for the shutdowns have already begun, with the missions expected to be closed during 2026.

The decision is part of Finland’s broader strategic review of its network of diplomatic missions, aimed at concentrating resources on countries deemed strategically important.

 Finnish Minister for Foreign Affairs Elina Valtonen said the move would help Finland adapt to a rapidly changing international environment, strengthen competitiveness, and manage external relations in line with national priorities.

Finland had previously closed its embassy in Pakistan in 2012 due to budgetary constraints, reopening it a decade later in 2022.

Similarly, in 2023, Sweden indefinitely closed its embassy in Islamabad, citing security concerns.
