Top government officers working at coveted posts are leaving their “secure jobs” and moving to the private sector and this trend is gaining momentum with the passage of time.

Currently, a good number of government officers is working in the private sector. Most recently, former deputy commissioner Sardar Saifullah Dogar joined the Department for International Development (DFID). Former Rawalpindi deputy commissioner Dr Omar Jahangir had joined the DFID some time ago. Former special secretary Usman Ahmad Chaudhry is also currently working with DFID.

Captain (Retired) Azam Suleman Khan left a top federal post to join the provincial ombudsman as its head. He took premature retirement to take on his new assignment. Also, bureaucrat Javed Mahmood took premature retirement to join politics.

In the past, Sardar Farooq Ahmad Khan Leghari, Khalid Ahmad Khan Kharral, Dr Amjad Saqib, Barrister Zafarullah, Rana Naseem Ahmad and Shafqat Mahmood left coveted posts in the bureaucracy and moved to other sectors. Ali Tahir took a long leave from the government job and opted to do a job abroad.

There is a fear that the government might face a shortage of good and competent officers in near future if it does not make a policy to curb this trend in the bureaucracy.
