Floods and torrential rains may delay school reopening in Punjab again

The Punjab government is considering extending the summer holidays by another week as widespread floods and torrential rains have wreaked havoc across Punjab, the sources said.  

The torrential rains have inundated villages and urban centers while causing extensive damage to crops, livestock, infrastructure, and even human lives.

The relentless downpour has left many areas waterlogged, paralyzing daily life and triggering a humanitarian challenge for local communities.

The severe weather conditions have also cast uncertainty over the reopening of educational institutions, which were due to resume on September 1 following the summer vacation.

The Punjab government had already pushed the reopening date once before, extending it from August 15 to September 1 due to the prolonged spell of the monsoon season.

With access routes blocked and many schools in flood-affected areas either damaged or inaccessible, authorities are now considering extending the holidays by another week to ensure the safety of students and staff.

A final decision is expected tomorrow after a fresh review of the weather forecast and the progress of relief operations.
