PMA Lahore condemns transfer of three senior Mayo Hospital doctors

The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Lahore on Friday strongly condemned the transfer of three senior doctors from Mayo Hospital, calling the move unjustified and based on incorrect reporting that could harm the healthcare system.

In a statement, PMA Lahore President Dr Shahid Malik said transferring senior doctors based on inaccurate reports was “highly unfortunate, condemnable and detrimental” to patient care and medical education.

He said the practice of humiliating and demoting senior doctors through inspections and reporting by health department officials must be stopped immediately, warning that targeting professors and senior physicians through fabricated or factually incorrect reports reflected administrative incompetence and raised concerns of mala fide intent.

According to Dr Malik, the three doctors were portrayed as absent from duty in the inspection report, despite being present at the hospital on the day in question.

Hospital records show they also performed surgical procedures, contradicting the allegations, he said.

He added that the doctors’ biometric attendance record over the past two months clearly demonstrated their regular presence and professional performance.

Taking punitive action despite this evidence, he warned, set a dangerous precedent that could demoralize doctors and negatively affect patient services and the teaching system.

The PMA Lahore president demanded the immediate withdrawal of the transfer orders and a transparent inquiry into those responsible for preparing false reports. 

He warned that if such actions against senior doctors continued, the medical community would be forced to raise the issue at all appropriate and constitutional forums to protect professional dignity and institutional autonomy.
