Too much exercise could threaten women’s fertility, experts say

As fitness trends sweep across Pakistan, more women are committing to intense workouts and strict diets.

While staying active supports overall health, experts warn that excessive exercise combined with low-calorie intake and inadequate rest can disrupt hormones and interfere with ovulation.

Expert explains that overtraining may lead to irregular or missed menstrual cycles, fatigue, and even temporary reproductive shutdown, a condition known as functional hypothalamic amenorrhea.

High intensity routines and restrictive diets can trigger hormonal imbalances, elevating stress hormones like cortisol and reducing estrogen levels critical for fertility. Even low body fat, often viewed as a fitness goal, can impair reproductive function. Recognizing warning signs early and seeking medical guidance is crucial to prevent long term issues.

Experts emphasize that fitness and fertility can coexist when approached mindfully. Moderate exercises such as yoga, swimming, walking, or light strength training, paired with a nutrient-rich diet and proper rest, help maintain hormonal balance.

Exercise should energize, not exhaust, ensuring women stay healthy and fertility ready while enjoying the benefits of an active lifestyle.
