The Election Commission of Pakistan has decided to hold local government elections in Punjab in the last week of April, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
An ECP meeting presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja was held in Islamabad on Wednesday.
The meeting was told that the local bodies’ term in Punjab was expired on Jan 1, 2022 and the commission was going to start demarcations of constitutions for the third time.
The commission was asked to hold consultation with the representatives of provincial government for conducting the LG polls.
The Punjab government representative told the meeting that the draft rules would be put forward before the provincial cabinet during its next meeting. After the approval of the rules, their copies would be provided to the commission, he added.
The chief election commissioner said that the ECP had either conducted or about to conduct LG polls in all other provinces. It has even given schedule for Islamabad LG polls, he added.
“Punjab is the only province where local government election could not be held,” CEC Raja said.
At the conclusion, the meeting, however, decided to hold the local bodies’ elections in Punjab in the last week of April.
