While addressing a seminar organised in Karachi on the prohibition of usury, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman Wednesday appealed to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to implement the judgement of Federal Shariat Court regarding the abolition of usury in the country, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
“The Federal Shariat Court ruled to abolish usury in the country. We appeal to the prime minister to implement the verdict of the Shariat Court,” Maulana Fazl said.
“There should be a positive reaction to the Shariat Court’s decision from the business community. Usury is the problem of not religious people only, but of everyone,” he pointed out.
Renowned scholar Mufti Taqi Usmani presented a resolution in the seminar on the elimination of usury from the country. He welcomed the ruling of the Sharia Court against usury.
“Three courts of the country have ruled against usury. Steps should be taken to eliminate usury from the country,” read the text of the resolution.
“People should boycott the institutions dealing in usury. The private banks and financial institutions should withdraw their appeals regarding usury,” it added.
“A task force should be established in the Ministry of Finance to end the interest-based system in the country. The Shariah Bench of the Shariat Court and the Supreme Court should be made more active,” it demanded.
“The government should take immediate action on the ruling of the Shariat Court in which meaningful progress should be seen. A team of scholars should be established to monitor the government’s actions,” it added.
