Khaqan Abbasi appears before NAB, says it’s political engineering
As PML-N Senior Vice-president Shahid Khaqan Abbasi appeared before the NAB investigators in connection with the appointment of former MD of Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation (PMDC) on Wednesday, he described the process as political engineering, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
“This country can’t be managed in this way. I always say either run the NAB or run the country,” the former prime minister repeated his stance. “Nothing can be run in the country in the presence of NAB,” he said and added that the politicians were being dragged to get them imprisoned.
Talking to media persons outside the Rawalpindi office of NAB, Abbasi said Khalid Sajjad Khokar had been appointed as MD six years ago – when he [Abbasi] was serving as the minister for petroleum and natural resources – after going through a complete process.
The NAB claimed that he was appointed against the rules despite the fact that Khokhar had served in the same capacity during the past too for eight years, Abbasi remarked and added that it proved him as a qualified person for the job.
Abbasi said he asked the NAB officials to share the details of any corruption and their response was there had been violations of rules only. He questioned which rules were violated but they couldn’t cite any, the PML-N leaders told the reporters.
Sharing the details of his conversation with the NAB investigators, Abbasi said why a person [Khokhar], who had retired from service after working honestly, was being dragged in the courts. The NAB was meant only to defame the politicians by using media, he said and added that entire Pakistan believed that the appointment of NAB chairman inappropriate.
No one was ready to serve in the departments/companies falling under the jurisdiction of the petroleum ministry, the biggest in the country which deals with matters involving billions of dollars, because of the ongoing witch hunt, Abbasi noted.
He said none of the companies currently had any MD, adding that the Companies Act clearly mentioned that the SECP was the regulator and the NAB had no authority to interfere.
Non-qualified persons, who won’t be assigned the task to run a shop, were currently running the affairs as board members, Abbasi said and remarked that then the people talked about the gas shortage in the country.
In this connection, the NAB said that an inquiry was already under way against the former managing director over assets beyond means.
Reacting to the news, Ahsan, the PML-N secretary-general, said it seemed that the APC had deprived those in the government of their sleep.
There could not be any drama more shamelessly and wrongheadedness, he remarked, criticising the government over targeting the opposition leaders one by one.
