PMD warns of more glacier bursts, flash floods in mountain valleys

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued an alert over the increasing risks of glacier lake outburst floods (GLOF) and flash floods, warning authorities and residents to remain vigilant.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the PMD officials said unusually high temperatures have been recorded in Arkari, Bad Swat, Darkut, Hispar Hopper, Gandus, and Gulkin valleys, raising concerns of accelerated glacier melting.

The department cautioned that the rising heat could trigger sudden and dangerous flooding in vulnerable areas. Communities living near glacier lakes have been urged to adopt preventive measures and stay alert for emergency updates.

It is pertinent to mention here that this morning, the channel reported that a glacier lake burst in Tali Das village of District Ghizer, turning the settlement into rubble.

The devastating outburst has destroyed a population comprising more than one hundred households.

Meanwhile, the flood triggered by the glacier burst has also created an artificial lake on the River Ghizer, which has severely affected over 906 houses in its path.

Emergency teams have been alerted to monitor the situation and assist the displaced families.

Local authorities have expressed grave concerns over the growing threat to surrounding villages.

The authorities have also warned that more damage could occur if the artificial lake overflows or breaches its banks.
