Sindh records high incidence of diseases in 2025 amid health challenges

Sindh, including Karachi, faced a high burden of infectious and communicable diseases in 2025, with health authorities reporting no significant reduction in disease rates across the province.

According to the Health Department, over 286,000 people suffered dog bites in Sindh, including 53,000 cases reported at just three hospitals in Karachi. Rabies claimed 21 lives during the year.

Dengue remained a major concern with more than 10,000 cases and 39 deaths reported. Karachi also recorded over 4,000 malaria cases.

Other diseases were also prevalent: 3,180 measles cases were reported across Sindh, including 1,600 in Karachi; 121 cases of diphtheria; four cases of monkeypox; seven cases of Congo virus; 151 cases of H1N1; and 327 COVID-19 cases in various hospitals.

The Health Department highlighted ongoing efforts to improve healthcare infrastructure. A total of 150 medical centers, both large and small, were handed over to the People’s Primary Healthcare Initiative (PPHI). Construction and renovation work was completed in several hospitals, and further improvements are planned for Gulshan-e-Hadeed, Razaqabad, Anchawali, and Saudabad hospitals.

Additionally, modern treatment facilities will be constructed at Civil Hospital and Jinnah Hospital in the coming year to strengthen patient care and disease management.
