Dust storms to downpours: Sudden weather shift brings rain across Pakistan

A dramatic shift in weather is being witnessed across Pakistan as a seasonal system brings strong winds, dust storms and widespread rainfall, offering much needed relief from rising temperatures in several regions.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the ongoing change is being driven by a westerly wave that has entered the country, triggering a two phase weather pattern.

The system typically begins with powerful dust laden winds followed by rain, thunderstorms, and in some areas, hail.

The impact has been most visible across major cities in Punjab, including Lahore, Rawalpindi and Faisalabad, where strong gusts of wind were followed by steady rainfall, significantly lowering temperatures.

Residents in Islamabad also experienced thunderstorms and cooler weather, with more showers expected in the coming days.

In the northern regions, including Peshawar and areas like Swat Valley, the system has brought rain accompanied by chances of hailstorms, while higher altitudes may even receive light snowfall.

Meanwhile, southern parts of the country, particularly Karachi, have also experienced a mix of dusty winds and thunderstorms.

The coastal city recently saw strong winds followed by rainfall, contributing to a temporary dip in heat levels.

Interior Sindh is expected to remain partly cloudy with intermittent rain spells.

In Quetta and surrounding areas, similar conditions have been reported, with gusty winds and scattered rain bringing a noticeable chill to the air.

Meteorologists explain that the sudden drop in temperature is due to cold air accompanying the dust storm, which is then intensified by rainfall.

This transition period between winter and summer often leads to such rapid and sometimes unpredictable weather changes.

The current system is expected to persist over the next few days, with intermittent rain, cloudy skies, and cool breezes forecast for multiple regions.

Authorities have also advised caution, warning that strong winds and thunderstorms may lead to temporary disruptions, including power outages and reduced visibility.

As Pakistan experiences this seasonal transformation, the blend of stormy skies and refreshing rainfall continues to reshape the country’s weather landscape, offering a brief but welcome pause from the heat.
