Online gambling dispute ends in husband's murder two months after marriage in India

A woman in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India, has been arrested along with her parents and brother for allegedly killing her husband following a dispute over money lost in online gambling, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday.

According to Indian media and police officials, the incident occurred just two months after the couple’s marriage, which followed a nine-year relationship dating back to their student days.

The accused woman, identified as Jyoti, married Jitendra Kumar Yadav on Nov 25, 2025.

Police said tensions emerged within weeks of the wedding after Jitendra allegedly withdrew 20,000 rupees from Jyoti’s bank account and lost the money through online gambling, triggering repeated arguments over finances.

On Jan. 26, the dispute escalated after Jyoti confronted her husband about the missing money.

Police said she then called her parents, Kali Charan and Chameli, and her brother Deepak to the house.

During the confrontation, investigators alleged that the family restrained Jitendra while Jyoti strangled him, causing his death.

In an attempt to conceal the crime, the accused allegedly staged the killing as a suicide by hanging the body with a muffler and informed neighbours that Jitendra had taken his own life.

Police initially treated the case as a suspected suicide when officers arrived at the scene and found the body hanging in a room.

However, a complaint filed by the victim’s brother, Ajay Kumar, prompted authorities to order a post-mortem examination.

The autopsy report later confirmed that Jitendra died from strangulation rather than hanging, leading police to convert the case from abetment to suicide to murder.

During interrogation, Jyoti confessed to the crime and provided details of the incident, police said.

All four accused are currently under investigation as authorities continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the killing.
