IHC's Justice Jahangiri challenges SHC's degree case ruling in SC

Islamabad High Court’s (IHC) Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri has filed a petition in the Supreme Court (SC), challenging a recent Sindh High Court (SHC) decision concerning his degree obtained from Karachi University.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, in the petition, Justice Jahangiri requested that the September 25 ruling of the SHC be declared null and void.

He argued that the court dismissed his plea to be made a party in the case and overlooked the question of whether the petition was maintainable.

The petition further maintained that issuing a unilateral decision without hearing the affected party was contrary to the law.

It is pertinent to mention that on September 30, 2025, the SHC heard the petition related to Justice Jahangiri’s challenge to the Karachi University Syndicate and the Unfair Means Committee’s decision.

SHC Justice Iqbal Kalhoro observed that notices would be served to all parties concerned and adjourned the hearing until replies were received.

During the hearing, Barrister Salahuddin argued that the Karachi University decision of September 25 was unlawful.

He submitted that at least four Supreme Court rulings establish that universities cannot cancel degrees without prior notice. He added that similar petitions had earlier been dismissed for non-prosecution.

Justice Kalhoro inquired whether there was documentary evidence confirming the right to sit for examinations or admission to the university.

In response, Barrister Salahuddin argued that the Karachi University Act itself does not empower the institution to revoke degrees.

He further claimed that the case was rooted in malice, noting that the complaint originated from an individual named Irfan from Orangi Town.
