Google’s mandatory Android 16 update to reduce Pixel 6a battery performance

Google is set to roll out a mandatory Android 16 update for all Pixel 6a devices starting July 8, 2025, but the software upgrade comes with a major catch: reduced battery capacity and charging performance for certain handsets.

According to the tech giant, the update is aimed at mitigating the risk of battery overheating that could potentially pose a safety hazard to users. Affected devices — referred to as "Impacted Devices" — will automatically receive battery management features that kick in after the phone reaches 400 charge cycles, slowing down performance to avoid overheating.

“All Pixel 6a phones will receive the Android 16 update,” Google said in an official support document. “However, only devices flagged as impacted will see battery capacity and charging speed reductions, as a safety measure.”

This isn’t the first time Google has throttled battery performance to address overheating concerns. Earlier this year, Pixel 4a users experienced similar changes, prompting criticism over performance trade-offs and a lack of user control. A similar backlash is expected from Pixel 6a users now facing diminished device functionality.

To offset the impact, Google will offer free battery replacements through a global program beginning July 21, 2025. Eligible users in the US, UK, Canada, Germany, Singapore, Japan, and India can either visit a walk-in repair centre or, in the case of the US and India, mail in their devices.

In addition to battery replacements, Google is also offering alternatives such as cash compensation or discount codes for new Pixel hardware on the Google Store. The company is encouraging users to register for their preferred option once the replacement program launches.

While the safety-first approach is appreciated in principle, many users are likely to view the update as a forced compromise that shortens the life of their device, especially without a voluntary opt-in. The Android 16 update, though feature-rich, may now carry an unintended cost for Pixel 6a users.
