Rs2.76b demanded from Punjab govt for building dykes along rivers

The Irrigation Department of Punjab has demanded Rs2.760 billion in funds from the Punjab government for building dykes around the rivers of the province, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Monday.

The irrigation department officials have stated that despite the fact that the water level in the River Ravi at Shahdara, Lahore has dropped, measures still need to be taken to protect the people living on the banks of the river from possible flooding.

Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued an alert about the flooding of low-lying areas in the suburbs of Lahore. 

Therefore, department officials have stated that there is an immediate need to construct an embankment in the katcha area surrounding the River Ravi. 

Right now, the inflow of water in the River Ravi’s Lahore section is 12,984 cusecs. 

The officials have warned that in the event of a delay in the construction of a dam at Shahdara, the people living in the vicinity of the river could be at risk.
