PECA Law challenged in Supreme Court 

After Lahore High Court, the ‘controversial’ Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) Law 2025 has been challenged in Supreme Court of Pakistan, reported 24 NewsHD TV channel. 

A petition was filed in the apex court by a citizen, arguing that the recent amendments violate fundamental human rights and are against the constitution. 

The petitioner maintained that certain provisions of PECA undermine the basic right to freedom of expression. It urged the top court to review these provisions and assess their compatibility with human rights. The petitioner has named the President, Speaker of the National Assembly, Chairman of the Senate, and Secretary of Law as respondents in the case.

Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) expressed concern over the passage of controversial PECA bill. The HRCP while demanding thorough debate over the Prevention of Electronic Crimes (Amendment) Bill, 2025 in the Senate and apprehended that the enforcement of the bill, will result in targeting newsmen and political and social activists. 

The PECA Amendments Bill, 2025 was also challenged in Lahore High Court (LHC) earlier citing threat to freedom of speech.
