FBR assures taxpayers of smooth transition to e-filing, confirms active status for 2025

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has reassured taxpayers that reports suggesting a large number of individuals being declared “inactive” are completely baseless. The status of taxpayers for the year 2025 will be determined based on returns filed in the 2024 tax year.

FBR emphasized that taxpayers who have submitted extension applications within the stipulated period will not be removed from the list of active taxpayers. Furthermore, all new filers for the 2025 tax year will be included in the active taxpayer list by November 15, 2025.

In line with recent amendments to the Income Tax Rules, the manual submission of returns has been discontinued. However, taxpayers who filed returns manually last year have been granted a one-month extension to transition smoothly to the e-filing system. Regional Tax Offices have been directed to provide full support to ensure taxpayers can adapt easily to the new process.

Additionally, a 15-day extension has been granted to taxpayers who have applied for extensions through the system. Those unable to file by the due date still have the option to request an extension online until November 15, 2025.

The FBR’s proactive measures aim to simplify tax compliance and make the e-filing system more accessible, ensuring that all taxpayers can maintain their active status without disruption.
