Dense fog forces closure of motorways M4 and M5 in Southern Punjab

Dense fog continued to blanket large parts of southern Punjab on Tuesday, forcing the closure of key motorway sections due to zero visibility, officials said.

According to the Motorway Police, traffic on Motorways M4 and M5 was suspended as visibility dropped to dangerously low levels. The M4 has been closed from Sher Shah Interchange to Pindi Bhattian, while the M5 remains shut from Sher Shah Interchange to Zahir Pir Interchange. In addition, the M4 section from Gojra to Abdul Hakeem has also been closed because of fog.

Motorway Police Central Region spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed said the closures were implemented to protect the lives and property of road users. He warned that lane violations in foggy conditions could lead to serious and potentially fatal accidents, urging drivers to strictly follow lane discipline.

The spokesperson advised commuters to avoid unnecessary travel and to plan journeys during daylight hours, noting that safer travel times in foggy conditions are generally between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm. Drivers were also instructed to use fog lights, avoid overspeeding, and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.

Motorways M4 and M5 will be reopened once visibility improves, officials said. Citizens planning to travel were advised to contact the Motorway Police Helpline 130 for updates, guidance, and assistance before starting their journey.
