Telenor considers selling Easypaisa in latest Pakistan exit step: Report
Norwegian telecommunications group Telenor is exploring the sale of its controlling stake in Easypaisa Bank, a move that could mark the company's complete exit from Pakistan, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter.
The report said Telenor is working with Citigroup on a potential sale of its 55% stake in Easypaisa Bank. The transaction could value the Pakistani digital lender at several hundred million dollars, according to one of the sources cited by Bloomberg.
Sources said Telenor is expected to invite initial bids from prospective buyers in the coming months, although discussions remain ongoing and no final decision has been made.
The potential divestment follows Telenor's exit from Pakistan's telecom sector.
In 2025, the company completed the sale of Telenor Pakistan to the PTCL Group for approximately Rs108 billion ($385 million). Easypaisa, however, was excluded from that transaction and continued to operate independently under its existing ownership structure.
Bloomberg reported that the remaining stake in Easypaisa is owned by Ant Group.
The potential sale comes as Easypaisa continues to post strong financial results.
For the quarter ended March 31, 2026, Easypaisa reported a profit after tax (PAT) of Rs1.49 billion and earnings per share (EPS) of Rs2.47, while profit before tax (PBT) reached Rs3.66 billion, a 4.4x increase from Rs0.84 billion in the same quarter last year.
As per Bloomberg, the Norwegian company is working with Citigroup on the sale of its 55% stake in the Pakistani digital bank, which could be valued at several hundred million dollars, according to one of the people.
“Telenor plans to invite initial offers from prospective bidders within the next few months,” the people said. However, considerations are ongoing, and no final decisions have been made, stated the report.
The report informed that Ant Group Co. holds the remaining shares of Easypaisa.
