Michael Rider unveils first collection for Celine

American designer Michael Rider, who succeeded Hedi Slimane as chief designer at Celine, unveiled his first collection for the luxury French brand on Sunday in Paris, featuring a spring wardrobe of chic design with a rock-infused edge.

"Coming back to Celine, and to Paris in a changed world, has been incredibly emotional for me," the designer said in a statement.

Rider had previously worked as head designer under former Celine artistic director Phoebe Philo from 2008–2018.

Following Slimane’s video-only runway shows, Michael Rider brought LVMH-owned Celine back to the catwalk with a live show at the house’s headquarters in central Paris, partly outdoors despite driving rain.

Anna Wintour, who recently announced her departure as editorial director of American Vogue, was seated front row alongside Jonathan Anderson, newly named artistic director at Dior, a fellow LVMH stablemate.

Rider, who has had stints at Balenciaga and Polo Ralph Lauren, took over from Hedi Slimane following the latter’s departure in October 2024.

Slimane is credited with helping expand sales at the Parisian label during his eight-year stint in charge, shaking up its bourgeois image with his trademark skinny silhouettes.

Rider's collection featured long wool coats with back slits, ultra-slim or carrot trousers for men and women, knitwear, fitted blazers and leather jackets in his unisex Spring 2026 collection.

Elegant evening dresses and short fur jackets completed the line-up.

On the accessories front, ties were striped in an Oxford student style, and wide-leg trousers were tucked into supple leather boots.

His debut was set in a neutral palette of khaki, sand, white and black, punctuated with flashes of bright colour such as rich greens, reds and deep blues.
