Punjab CM unveils plan to save falling groundwater level
Maryam Nawaz orders completion of drainage projects before monsoon
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has ordered completion of all drainage projects before monsoon and also unveiled a plan to arrest the falling ground water level, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
Chairing a meeting through video link in Lahore on Saturday, CM Maryam Nawaz introduced a major plan to save the falling groundwater level.
For the first time in the history of Punjab, a network of 358 underground storage tanks will be laid to save water shortage and to increase groundwater level.
Rain will no longer be a burden but it will be a mercy as 34 large underground storage water tanks will be built in cities for timely drainage of rainwater.
Along with underground water tanks, recharge wells will also be built to improve the groundwater level.
As many as 6,100 kilometers of streets and sewerage will be built in different areas of Punjab.
About 61 disposal stations will be renovated and 56 new disposal stations will be built in different cities to improve drainage while 328 waste water treatment plants will also be built in Punjab.
The meeting also reviewed progress on Punjab Development Programme, Clean Water and Model Village Projects.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif visited the projects in a pictorial manner.
A sewage pipeline factory that will be effective for 100 years in Punjab has been installed in Lahore and production will start soon.
Street lights will be installed at 14679 locations in different cities and 3498 km long sewage lines will be laid in different cities.
PDP projects started in Sargodha, DG Khan, Gujarat, Okara, Jhang, Multan and Sialkot.
Projects are also being started in Jhelum, Hafizabad, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Nankana and Rawalpindi.
Over 33 million square feet of tuff tiles will be laid on the streets and roads of different cities.
526 state-of-the-art machines and tractors will be provided for drainage and other matters in various cities of Punjab.
Drainage systems will be built under the Punjab Rural Sanitation Empowerment Programme.
Development schemes worth Rs59 billion will be built in 485 villages under the Model Village Project.
Model Village Project will be launched in 200 villages of Punjab.
Dirty water ponds/sewers and wastewater treatment plants will also be set up and water from the wastewater treatment plant will be provided to the fields for irrigation.
Meeting also reviewed progress on the project to provide clean water bottles in various cities.
A report was submitted in the meeting on the project to provide clean water through small dams in Pothohar.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif directed to ensure the functionality of filtration plants for the provision of clean water.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif also directed to build paved streets in villages on priority.
Chief Minister also called for early completion of drainage projects in Gujrat and Sialkot.
Maryam Nawaz said the work that is being done in Punjab today was not done in 70-80 years.
After five years, a changed, modern and beautiful Punjab will be seen, Maryam Nawaz Sharif said.
