Federal Board introduces new grading system for matric and inter exams from 2026

The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) has announced a new grading system under which students will receive grades along with marks in their matriculation and intermediate examinations.

According to the Federal Board, the new system will be implemented from the first examination of 2026, while it will apply to the second level of matric and intermediate exams starting in 2027.

Under the revised formula, students securing between 96 and 100 percent marks will be awarded an A++ grade, while those scoring 91 to 95 percent will receive an A+ grade for excellent performance. Students obtaining 86 to 90 percent will be given an A grade, while those scoring 81 to 85 percent will receive a B++ grade. Candidates achieving 76 to 80 percent will earn a B+ grade, whereas those with 71 to 75 percent will be given a B grade. Similarly, students securing 61 to 70 percent will receive a C++ grade, those obtaining 51 to 60 percent will get a C grade, and those scoring between 40 and 50 percent will be awarded a D grade.

Students who score less than 40 percent will be declared failed and will have to retake the examination for the relevant subject.

A spokesperson for the Federal Board said that the new grading system has been introduced to enhance educational standards and to ensure a more transparent and fair evaluation process. The updated formula, the spokesperson added, aligns with modern assessment practices and aims to provide a comprehensive reflection of students’ performance across all subjects.
