Mitchell Marsh likely to retire from first class cricket , says Australian report

Australia’s white-ball captain Mitchell Marsh is reportedly preparing to step away from Sheffield Shield cricket, marking a likely end to his red-ball career at the domestic level, 24NewsHD TV reported on Monday. 

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, the 34-year-old has informed teammates that the ongoing season will probably be his last representing Western Australia in the Shield competition.

Marsh returned to red-ball cricket earlier this summer in hopes of staying in contention for a potential Ashes call-up.

However, the comeback proved underwhelming, producing only two single-digit scores against Victoria. With limited first-class appearances since 2019, this attempt may turn out to be his final outing in Australia’s domestic long-format arena.

If the decision is confirmed, it would close a first-class career that began in 2009, during which Marsh developed into one of Australia’s prominent all-rounders.

Yet, he is reportedly not ready to rule out his Test prospects entirely.

Despite his sparse red-ball involvement in recent years, Marsh believes he still has more to offer at the Test level, and influential figures within Australian cricket also appear open to the possibility of his return to the longest format.
