First-over magic continues as Shaheen Afridi matches Umar Gul’s ODI record

Pakistan’s pace sensation, Shaheen Shah Afridi, has etched his name alongside legendary bowler Umar Gul by claiming his ninth first-over wicket in ODIs, equaling Gul’s record.  

The milestone was achieved during the opening clash of the tri-nation ODI series against New Zealand at Gaddafi Stadium on Saturday.

Shaheen’s lethal delivery to dismiss Will Young on just the fourth ball of the innings added another feather to his cap, known for his early breakthroughs.  

Afridi’s impressive feat now places him as the joint-second Pakistani bowler with the most first-over ODI wickets, sharing the spot with Umar Gul. The record is currently co-held by former left-arm quick Mohammad Irfan and legendary swing bowler Wasim Akram, each boasting 10 wickets in the first over.
