Power Division denies ban on second electricity meters
Spokesperson says second meter is allowed under existing NEPRA rules: False meter ban claims on social media are legally punishable
The Power Division has strongly refuted circulating rumours on social media regarding a supposed ban on installing second electricity meters at residential properties, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.
According to the TV channel, calling the claims "completely false, misleading, and a malicious attempt to create unrest among the public," the power division emphasised that such disinformation is a punishable offence under the PECA Act.
According to the official spokesperson, second meters can still be obtained for residential spaces that qualify under existing legal provisions.
“As per NEPRA’s Consumer Services Manual 2021, any residential area comprising a separate portion with its own circuit, entrance, and kitchen is eligible to apply for an independent electricity meter,” the spokesperson clarified.
However, the Power Division warned that strict measures remain in place to prevent electricity misuse and unjust exploitation of subsidies. These legal safeguards are not new but continue to be fully enforced.
Citizens have been urged not to believe or spread unverified information. Instead, they are encouraged to cooperate with distribution companies to ensure fair and transparent electricity metering so that rightful beneficiaries receive their due without disruption.
