PTA warns mobile phone users to update ID cards to get 5G connectivity
PTA urges citizens to update ID cards for uninterrupted 5G connectivity and to avoid SIM blocking: Expired identity cards and unregistered SIMs risk immediate suspension
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has advised citizens to keep their national identity cards updated to ensure uninterrupted G5 mobile phone services, warning that expired documents may lead to the blocking of SIM cards.
According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, PTA said it is working to maintain seamless mobile connectivity across the country and urged users to update their identity records promptly.
The authority noted that SIM cards registered against expired identity cards or under another person’s name could be blocked at any time.
According to the PTA, citizens should renew their expired identity cards immediately to avoid inconvenience.
On 2 April 2026, Islamabad International Airport became the first airport in the country to offer 5G services, marking a key step in its digital transformation.
The service was launched in collaboration with a private cellular company, allowing passengers to access ultra-fast internet and enhanced digital facilities.
Earlier developments also signal rapid progress in next-generation connectivity, as on 19 March, leading telecom operators Jazz and Zong formally launched their 5G services, indicating the start of a nationwide rollout.
In the initial phase, Jazz activated 5G services at around 180 sites, covering Islamabad and all four provincial capitals—Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta—along with major cities such as Rawalpindi, Multan and Faisalabad.
The company said it is also expanding and upgrading its 4G network to improve service quality, having secured multiple spectrum bands, including 700 MHz, 2300 MHz, 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz, following a recent auction.
Meanwhile, Zong has accelerated its expansion, announcing the commercial launch of 5G services in more than 16 cities and outlining plans to install over 1,000 sites by 2026.
The company said its trials have recorded speeds exceeding 1.4 Gbps, underlining the potential of the technology.
Officials from both companies emphasised that 5G is expected to play a vital role in Pakistan’s industrial and economic development.
Advanced networks powered by artificial intelligence are likely to improve connectivity, digital services and overall user experience.
