Police warn citizens against buying second-hand mobile phones

Police have warned citizens, particularly buyers of second-hand mobile phones, to remain cautious, revealing that thousands of people have unknowingly used stolen devices over the past several years, reported 24NewsHd TV channel Friday.

According to police, the mobile tracking unit has compiled data of traced mobile phones from 2018 to 2025.

During this period, more than 35,000 people were found using stolen mobile phones. Police said over 35,000 such devices were recovered and legal action was taken against their users.

Officials stated that the total value of the recovered mobile phones exceeds Rs87.5 million.

In 2025 alone, more than 6,000 stolen or snatched mobile phones were tracked, with the value of recovered devices crossing Rs15 million.

Police have advised citizens to avoid purchasing mobile phones through online platforms, warning that such devices are often unregistered or stolen.

A comprehensive strategy has also been formulated to take action against dealers involved in buying and selling suspicious or unregistered mobile phones.

Police officials urged consumers to ensure that mobile phones are bought and sold only through authorized dealers to avoid legal complications and financial loss.
