Karachi’s garbage dumps to turn into green spaces

To make Karachi clean and green, the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has initiated efforts to transform garbage dumping sites into beautiful public spaces as part of its ongoing drive to improve cleanliness and promote a healthier urban environment.

In a recent development, a garbage dumping point located on Textile Avenue Road near Jamia Binoria in Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE), District Keamari, was removed along with accumulated debris, and the area was converted into a green belt. Plants and flowers have been planted at the site to enhance the beauty of the surroundings and discourage the re-emergence of illegal dumping.

The plantation drive at the former dumping site was carried out with the support of the local industrial community. FABKNIT Company owner Saleem Nagaria, who is also an executive member of the SITE Association of Industry, took the initiative to plant trees at the location, contributing to efforts to make the area greener and cleaner.

In a message issued from his office, SSWMB Managing Director Tariq Ali Nizamani said the board is committed to transforming garbage heaps into green spaces across the city.

“We have resolved to turn garbage dumps into gardens. Illegal dumping points are being gradually eliminated and replaced with green belts and plantations to promote a clean, green, and environmentally friendly Karachi. Cooperation from citizens and the industrial community is essential to sustain these efforts,” he said.

Assistant Director SITE Zone Ghulam Nabi stated that the operation to eliminate garbage dumping points in the area is ongoing. He added that a dumping point near Naurus Chowrangi was also recently removed and converted into a plantation site.

He further said that large quantities of construction debris are also being removed from different parts of SITE to improve cleanliness and restore the environment of the industrial area. Efforts by SSWMB to strengthen the waste management system and maintain cleanliness across the city are continuing.
