Pakistan unveils plan to protect sea turtles

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced a project to protect sea turtles, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday.

The Federal Minister said a project worth Rs90 million has been launched to protect sea turtles.

He said modern equipment will be installed in shrimp nets to save turtles and these modern equipment will be provided to fishermen free of charge.

The project is an important step towards the protection of marine life and sustainable fishing, Junaid Anwar Chaudhry said.

The Minister said the project is expected to increase shrimp exports threefold which currently are about $100 million annually.

The project will enable access to the American, European and Gulf markets.

Strict implementation of sustainable fishing principles will be ensured, Minister for Maritime Affairs said.

He said global environmental standards will further strengthen the reputation of Pakistan's marine products.
