Punjab govt decides to abolish vacant posts from BS-1 to 16

The Government of Punjab has decided to abolish vacant posts from BS-1 to BS-16, keeping in view the ongoing austerity drive due to the Gulf conflict, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Friday.

According to details, the Punjab government issued a notification to all departments to submit a detailed record of vacant posts in their department.

The Punjab government decided to abolish these posts which are lying vacant for a long time.

Earlier in January 2026, the Punjab government had decided to downsize government departments and had constituted a five-member committee for the purpose.

Under the downsizing plan, surplus employees of all departments falling within the scope of the exercise will be declared surplus and relieved, while their posts will be permanently abolished.

To implement the decision, a high-powered committee has been formed under the chairmanship of the Additional Chief Secretary.

The committee will review all 44 provincial departments and their subsidiary institutions.

Any department or subordinate body deemed unnecessary or a burden on the government will be abolished, while abolished entities will be merged into other departments.
