Cyber Alert: Hackers target Pakistani ministries with BlueLocker malware

Pakistan is witnessing a sharp rise in incidents of digital ransom demands carried out through the notorious BlueLocker malware, prompting the National Cyber Emergency Response Team to issue an urgent advisory to 39 key ministries and institutions, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Sunday.

According to the advisory, hackers are launching attacks via unverified platforms and virus-infected files, potentially suspending business operations and destroying valuable data.

The cyber watchdog has warned that BlueLocker ransomware can severely disrupt operations and lead to irreversible file loss.

Institutions have been instructed to implement multi-factor authentication systems, adopt robust email filtering for links and attachments, and keep backup drives separate from main systems.

The advisory also recommends securing forensic evidence in case of a cyberattack to aid in investigations.

Authorities stressed the need for improved preemptive systems against ransomware threats, urging organisations to upgrade their cybersecurity protocols before becoming targets.
