Punjab braces for severe cold spell from Jan 10–16

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Punjab has issued an advisory to all relevant departments, warning of an intensifying cold spell across the province from January 10 to 16, 24NewsHD TV reported.

According to PDMA Punjab, severe cold conditions along with chances of snowfall are expected in Rawalpindi, Murree, the Galiyat and the Potohar region, while an increase in fog and smog conditions is also anticipated across several parts of the province.

The advisory has been issued to the Tourism, Education, Health, Agriculture, Local Government, Forest, Communication and Works (C&W), Transport, Rescue 1122, National Highway Authority, and Police departments to ensure preparedness.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia directed educational institutions, including universities and colleges, to issue advisories to students regarding warm clothing and ensure adequate heating arrangements in classrooms.

He also instructed all hospitals, especially Basic Health Units, to ensure the availability of medicines and medical staff during the cold wave.

Urging the public to take precautionary measures, the PDMA advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel, use face masks in fog and smog conditions, and remain cautious during severe weather.

Tourists were advised to follow safety guidelines, as facilitation centres have been set up at various locations in Murree to assist visitors.

The PDMA control room is monitoring the situation round the clock, while citizens have been advised to drive cautiously, avoid overspeeding and sudden braking, use fog lights during travel, and contact the PDMA helpline 1129 in case of any emergency.
