Sabrina Carpenter channels Cher in '70s Bob Mackie gown at MTV VMAs after-party

Sabrina Carpenter turned heads at the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards after-party in New York City, paying tribute to music legend Cher in a dazzling archival Bob Mackie gown first worn half a century ago.

The Espresso hitmaker, 26, arrived at the star-studded Studio 54–themed celebration wearing the same custom-made outfit that Cher famously donned during her 1975 duet with Tina Turner on The Cher Show. The skintight black bodysuit, adorned with sparkling rhinestones and draped with pink and blue fringe, remains one of Mackie’s most iconic designs.

Carpenter styled the vintage look with towering silver heels and voluminous disco curls, leaning fully into the 1970s aesthetic.

Her bold makeup, complete with dramatic lower lashes and a vibrant pink lip, accentuated the retro glamour.

This isn’t the first time the two-time Grammy winner has honoured pop icons with her fashion choices.

At the 2024 VMAs, Carpenter paid homage to Madonna by wearing the same Bob Mackie gown the Queen of Pop wore to the 1991 Academy Awards.

Earlier this year, she recreated Madonna’s Blond Ambition-era look for her Vogue cover shoot, prompting Madonna herself to comment playfully on Instagram.

Carpenter also nodded to Britney Spears during her first-ever televised performance of her new single Tears at the 2025 VMAs. Taking inspiration from Spears’ legendary Dream Within a Dream Tour in 2001, she performed in a sparkling bra while dancing in simulated rain inside UBS Arena.

The performance drew widespread comparisons to Spears’ iconic rain-drenched HBO concert special.

The night proved especially triumphant for Carpenter, who took home three Moon Person trophies. She won Best Album for Short n’ Sweet, Best Pop Artist, and Best Visual Effects for her Manchild music video.

In her emotional acceptance speech, she thanked her devoted fans for their support, calling herself 'the luckiest girl in the world'.
