The protesting employees announced calling off protest late Thursday after the government promised a 25 per cent increase in their salaries.
Thousands of officials under the umbrella of All Government Employees Grand Alliance held a demo in the capital in pursuit of at least a 40 per cent pay raise – in wake of rampant inflation. They braved the use of force and teargas shelling too.
Addressing a press conference, three key ministers said a 25 per cent increase in salary got approved on Thursday. The raise is announced for employees from grade 1 to 19 on an ad-hoc basis and the new changes will be added in the upcoming budget.
The officials said it was impossible for the government to raise salaries beyond grade 19 due to the financial crunch.
