Saif Ali Khan wins $1.6 billion Bhopal land battle, ends 25-year legal war

Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan and the Pataudi family have emerged victorious in a decades long legal battle over a prime ancestral property in Bhopal, bringing a nearly 25 year dispute to a decisive close. The property was valued at approximately 15,000 Indian crores ($1.6 billion) according to Bollywood Bubble.

Saif Ali Khan, who carries the royal title of the Nawab of Pataudi, along with his mother Sharmila Tagore and his sisters, secured a major court ruling in their favor on Friday. A district court in Madhya Pradesh dismissed a rival claim over a 16.62 acre parcel of land located in Nayapura, Bhopal, firmly restoring ownership to the Pataudi family.

The contested land has been at the center of litigation since 1998, when Akeel Ahmed and several others approached the court claiming the property did not belong to the Pataudis. The group alleged that the land had been gifted back in 1936 by Nawab Hamidullah Khan of the former Bhopal royal family to their ancestors, arguing that this historical transaction entitled them to legal ownership.

However, during the course of the proceedings, the claimants failed to produce any concrete or credible documentary evidence to support their assertion. The court closely examined the records presented and found no material proof that could validate the alleged gift or establish any lawful right over the property.

In its ruling, the court also highlighted the extraordinary delay in initiating the case. The judges noted that the long gap between the alleged transfer of land and the filing of the claim significantly weakened the petitioners’ position. The combination of missing documentation and procedural delay led the court to reject the case in full.

With this judgment, the Pataudi family’s ownership of the 16.62 acre land stands legally reaffirmed.

The ruling effectively puts an end to one of the longest running property disputes linked to the former princely state of Bhopal. The land is recognized as ancestral property with deep historical ties to the family.

For Saif Ali Khan and his family, the verdict marks the conclusion of a prolonged legal struggle that stretched across generations. The decision not only secures their claim to the Nayapura land but also closes the door on further challenges related to this particular dispute, reinforcing the family’s standing in matters connected to their royal heritage.
