Imran accepts Asim Bajwa’s resignation as SAPM
Lt-Gen (retd) Asim Saleem Bajwa on Monday announced his resignation from the office of special assistant to the prime minister on information and broadcasting, just weeks after Imran Khan had refused to accept the same.
In a tweet, Bajwa said he had requested the prime minister to relinquish him from the additional portfolio and added, “He very kindly approved my request.”
I requested the honourable Prime Minister to relinquish me from the additional portfolio of SAPM on Info & broadcasting. He very kindly approved my request— Asim Saleem Bajwa (@AsimSBajwa) October 12, 2020
The retired general is currently serving as the CPEC Authority chairman. He was later assigned the additional task by the PTI government.
Bajwa made this announcement as the prime minister had not accepted the resignation tendered soon after the publication of a news item in which the businesses and assets of Bajwa were reported. However, Bajwa had refuted the allegations.
At that time, Imran said he was satisfied with the explanation given by his special assistant who should continue discharging his duties.
Apparently, the issue had died since then but Bajwa suddenly shared this news on Monday through social media. However, no announcement in this regard has so far been made the government or the Cabinet Division by the time this report was being filed.
The news report has accused Bajwa and his family of accumulating assets and running businesses worth hundreds of millions of dollars, mainly in the US.
Since then, the opposition leaders, especially PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz, have calling for a probe while criticising the government agencies like NAB for taking notice of the issue.
