Prime Minister Imran Khan has taken into confidence his cabinet members on the matter of new ISI DG Lt Gen Nadeem Ahmed Anjum’s appointment notification asking them not to give any wrong connotation to the matter as they were all on the same page and soon all issues will be resolved, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Prime Minister Khan was presiding over a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad on Tuesday. 

The premier dispelled any wrong impression on the matter of new ISI DG appointment notification, exhorting that they all acted in concert and all issues would be sorted soon. He took his cabinet members on board over the issue.

After the cabinet meeting, Federal Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry briefed the media regarding the details of the meeting. 

He reiterated that there was no rift between the civil-military relationship. “The relationship is amicable,” the minister added. 

He informed that a long meeting was held between Prime Minister Imran Khan and Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa last night. He said that Prime Minister is the authority on the appointment of ISI DG. He said a legal way would be adopted for the appointment of the new spymaster. 

He categorically said that there would be no step taken either from the Prime Minister office or the military setup to damage the repute of one another.

Both the leaders enjoyed good and close cooperation with each other and the final decision would be taken with mutual consensus, he added. The minister said there was a close liaison between Pakistan’s military and political leadership and relationships were ideal.

National Rehmatul Aalemin Authority okayed

During its meeting, the cabinet approved the establishment of the National Rehmatul Aalemin Authority before the advent of Eid Miladun Nabi on 12th Rabiul Awwal.

The Authority would work for promoting the real image of Islam and give advice for the preparation of a curriculum for children in light of the life of the Holy Prophet (SAW).

The minister said that the authority would work for the promotion of the traits of tolerance and coexistence in the masses. The love for the Holy Prophet was part and parcel of the faith of every Muslim, who was “Rehmatulil Aalimeen” not “Rehmatulil Muslimeen” but unfortunately this image could not be highlighted in Pakistan in the past, he added.

Fawad said the objective of this authority would be to mould the characters of the young generation in the light of the “Seerat-un Nabi (SAW)”. It would not be a traditional authority, top scholars from not only Pakistan but from all over the world would be its members, he added.

The minister said that the narrative that Islam spread through love, affection and respect and honour of the other people would be promoted and rights of minorities, women and children should be protected.

The cabinet members offered Dua for the founder of Pakistan’s atomic programme, the late Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan. The MQM urged other members of the cabinet to change Islamabad Airport’s name after Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan. 

Over 15 ministers including the National Assembly Speaker, Senate Chairman, Chairman of Joints Chiefs of Staff Committee, and Naval chief attended the funeral.

It was unfortunate that there was a tendency on social media to make news from rumours sans verifying the facts, he added.

He appealed to the journalists to demonstrate responsibility and verify the news circulating on social media before reporting to their respective organizations to counter fake news and propaganda.

MQM leader Aminul Haq suggested that some city or scientific building be named after Dr AQ Khan. 

He also complained that since the MQM was the government’s ally, it should be taken into confidence on the matter of electoral reforms. 

Agreeing with him, PM Khan said that the MQM complaint was justified as they should be taken into confidence regarding reforms decision.

Online power of attorney for overseas Pakistanis

He said that the cabinet made a landmark decision for approval of online power of attorney for overseas Pakistanis as this government had feelings for the problems faces by them in that regard.

Fawad said that in the past, no government ever bothered to resolve the problems of expatriates but the present government had attached special priority to settle their issues.

It was the PTI government that took steps for repatriation of hundreds of Pakistani prisoners languishing in foreign jails in petty crimes, he added.

New unit for Islamabad police

The minister said that another important development was that the cabinet was given a presentation for setting up a new unit in Islamabad police for mob handling.

This unit would be well trained and equipped with the latest technology including drones and cameras to ensure that the residents of the capital were protected from such riots and they do not face the inconvenience of road closures every now and then, he added.

He said that Supreme Court had imposed a ban on protests at D-Chowk but still a handful people block the road there whenever they like. The new unit would be a very good initiative to protect the capital from protesters, he added.

Visa for Afghan traders

Fawad said the Cabinet had decided to include the traders coming from Afghanistan to Pakistan in the visa list as the volume of goods being traded between the two countries had increased manifold.

The government, he said, was keen to encourage the legal entry of Afghan people coming to Pakistan by bringing ease in the visa regime to the convenience of the Afghan nationals. Similarly, the minister said the Cabinet had okayed the code of conduct for visa issuance to Afghan nationals.

The visa process for Afghan nationals had also been made online due to the huge influx of people coming to the Pakistan Embassy for the issuance of visas, he added.

The minister said the cabinet also approved the proposal to give online visas to foreigners working on various China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects and decided to write off visa fee for Afghan nationals.

He said the Cabinet also approved the reconstitution of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) Council of Complaints, Islamabad. Syed Muhammad Ali Bukhari would be the chairman of the council while Journalist Mazhar Barlas, Naeem Khan, and three women Nighat Saeed, Batool Zain, and (Tallat Azeem) had been made members to the council, he added.

Briefing on electronic voting machines

The minister said that the cabinet was given a briefing on electronic voting machines. In almost all cabinet meetings, the issues of Electronic Voting Machines and grant of voting rights to overseas Pakistanis’ were discussed, he added.

The minister said the cabinet had decided that overseas Pakistanis’ would be provided the right to franchise at every cost.

To a query, he said Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen was holding talks with International Monitory Fund (IMF) and would continue to extend his services as per law and the constitution.

In response to another question, he said the Prime Minister was himself holding the portfolio of Minister of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development. He said that the cabinet gave approval to the renewal of licenses for K2 Air and Air Sial.

The Establishment Division informed the cabinet that out of 80 top posts, 40 had been filled through the process of competition whereas 18 top posts were abolished, he added.

He said that the PTI government had reconstituted the Board of Directors and named about 80 top-level appointments and none of them were done in violation of merit, adding no appointment done by the PTI government was challenged. The minister said in the past almost all appointments were challenged as merit was violated and this was a big change.

He said that the cabinet decided that for two federal government medical and dental colleges, the merit would be 50 per cent from FSc marks and 50 per cent from the MD-CAT examination.

He said that the cabinet gave approval to ECC meeting decisions taken on October 7 except a demand of Rs2.4 billion for a special economic zone had been deferred. The cabinet, the minister said constituted a sub-committee comprising Minister for Energy Hammad Azhar and Minister for Maritime Affairs Ali Zaidi which would take up decisions of transport logistics committee meeting on October 4 on dredging gat Port Qasim would give proposals.
