On the recommendation of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Arif Alvi on Saturday announced considerable cut in the jail terms of prisoners languishing in jails across Punjab under article-45 of the constitution, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

According to details, as per the decision, which was announced on the eve of the country’s 75th Independence Day (August 14, 2022), the remaining sentence period of male prisoners, aged 65 years and above, who have spent 15 years in jail, and female prisoners, 60 years of age and above, who have completed 10 years of their jail terms, will be waived off.

Similarly, the prisoners, who have completed three-fourth of their jail term, will get their remaining sentence period waived off.

Likewise, sentence period of the prisoners spending 20 years in jails will also be waived off.

However, the relief was not meant for those convicted in rape, robbery, kidnapping, terrorism, anti-state activities, Hudood Ordinance and murder cases.

IGP Jail, Punjab Mirza Shahid Saleem Beg said that prisoners and their relatives were happy at the announcement and were thankful to both the president and the prime minister for that.
