Nikon launches 1st full-frame Z lens for video
Nikon has introduced the NIKKOR Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ, expanding its Z-mount lens range with a power zoom lens designed specifically for video. Tailored for solo shooters and small production teams, the lens promises high-quality 8K footage while remaining light enough for handheld shooting. With a constant f/4 aperture and a versatile focal range, it’s an ideal choice for videographers working with Nikon’s full-frame cameras, such as the Z9 and Z8.
Weighing just 1210g (including the tripod collar), the lens offers a compact, well-balanced design. It features servo zoom control, making it optimized for both gimbal and handheld shooting, making it a reliable all-in-one zoom option for filmmakers. Nikon’s advanced optical engineering ensures sharp results across the entire focal range, while special coatings reduce ghosting and flare. Additionally, the lens's video-centric design minimizes focus breathing, ensuring consistent framing when adjusting focus.
A standout feature is its ease-in/ease-out zoom control, eliminating the need for an external motorized zoom unit. Users can adjust zoom speed with 11 different levels, accessible via the zoom lever or camera function buttons. The lens also offers position record and recall functions for precise shot reframing between takes. The linear manual focus allows for repeatable, controlled focus pulls, and users can reverse the focus and zoom ring directions for personal preference.
A yellow ring around the mount distinguishes this lens as a video-specific model. It’s fully compatible with professional accessories, including matte boxes and follow-focus systems, and can be operated remotely through Nikon’s NX Tether (on PC) or SnapBridge and NX Field apps. Built with durability in mind, the lens is sealed against dust and moisture and features a fluorine-coated front element for added protection.
Dirk Jasper, Product Manager at Nikon Europe, emphasized the lens’s significance: "We are committed to making the Z system the go-to solution for creators at all levels, and Nikon’s first pro video lens for Z-mount cameras marks an exciting leap forward. You can count on this lens to deliver outstanding results, making it an invaluable tool when reshoots aren’t feasible due to time, budget, or other constraints.”
