Usama Khan says censorship is keeping Pakistani content off global ‘OTT platforms’

Pakistani actor Usama Khan has weighed in on the ongoing debate surrounding Pakistan's absence from major global streaming platforms, arguing that the country's culture of censorship and bans is preventing filmmakers from creating the kind of bold, fact-based stories that international OTT services like Netflix seek.

Taking to his Instagram Stories, the actor shared a series of detailed notes, expressing his views on why Pakistani content continues to struggle for representation on global streaming platforms despite the country's rich storytelling potential.

Referring to a recently banned film in a neighbouring country that explores historical events, Usama questioned whether Pakistan would ever allow filmmakers to produce similarly transparent projects based on its own history.

He wrote:

"Adding to my last post, many people these days are talking about a movie that has been banned in our neighbouring country one that talked about the historical facts of 1995. Can you imagine making historical movies in Pakistan based on true events? People genuinely want to watch documentary-style films about our history that are factually accurate."

The actor then listed several historical and political subjects he believes deserve cinematic exploration, including Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah's final ambulance journey, Fatima Jinnah's 1965 presidential campaign, the unresolved deaths of members of the Bhutto family, developments in Kashmir and Balochistan, Pakistan's recurring political crises, the 1999 military coup, and the repeated use of treason allegations against political leaders.

In a follow-up story, Usama questioned whether such stories could ever be told with complete transparency under the current system.

"Will the government ever allow such stories to be told with true transparency? Because the reality is, OTT platforms do not solely rely on our usual, safe family dramas. They demand different, gritty genres. And frankly, I don't think anyone currently in a position of power is ready to accept that kind of change."

His remarks come as discussions surrounding Pakistani content on Netflix and other global OTT platforms continue to dominate the entertainment industry. Following recent statements by government officials and celebrities, many actors, filmmakers, and content creators have been sharing their perspectives on what Pakistan needs to do to gain stronger international representation.
