James Van Der Beek reflects on cancer battle and its impact on family life

Actor James Van Der Beek recently opened up about his struggles following a stage 3 colorectal cancer diagnosis, revealing how the illness reshaped his identity and role as a husband and father.

The Dawson’s Creek alum, who just turned 48, shared an emotional video on Instagram, calling the past year the hardest of his life. “I wanted to share something that I learned with y’all,” he said.

Van Der Beek reflected on how he once defined himself by his ability to support his wife and six children. “I could define myself as a capable, loving, strong, supportive husband, father, and provider,” he noted. However, his diagnosis forced him to confront a new reality.

“I had to come nose to nose with death,” he admitted, explaining how cancer treatment left him unable to fulfill his usual responsibilities. “I could no longer be the husband who was helpful to my wife. I could no longer be a father who could pick up his kids and be there for them. I wasn’t working, so I couldn’t be a provider.”

Despite these struggles, Van Der Beek’s wife, Kimberly, expressed unwavering support, calling him a “treasure.” She shared a heartfelt tribute alongside photos of their journey together, writing, “I feel like the luckiest lady in the world to be married to you.”

She wished for a year filled with “laughter, dancing, deepening connection with God, exceptional health, and family snuggles.”

The couple, married since 2010, share six children: Olivia, 14, Joshua, 13, Annabel, 11, Emilia, 8, Gwendolyn, 6, and Jeremiah, 2.
