Judicial Commission to consider key reforms in judges’ appointment at next meeting

A joint meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan has been called on June 19, where several important matters related to the appointment and evaluation of judges are expected to be considered.

The meeting will be chaired by Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi and will include participation from members of the superior judiciary, including representatives from High Courts and the Federal Shariat Court.

According to details, the commission will deliberate on four key agenda items. These include approval of interview rules for the appointment of judges, and the proposed framework for evaluating the performance of High Court judges.

The meeting will also consider amendments to the Judicial Commission Rules 2024, alongside the approval of procedures for nominating judges to constitutional benches of High Courts.

Officials said that in the previous meeting held on June 11, proposals regarding these reforms were presented before the commission members. The upcoming joint session has now been convened to finalize and approve those recommendations.

The deliberations are part of ongoing efforts to streamline judicial appointments and improve performance assessment mechanisms within the country’s superior judiciary.
